Active Reading Strategies I Have Applied to Another Course at UNE
Active reading can be applied to more than just reading for english class. Another class that I applied the active reading strategies that I learned in english was sociology. In sociology, we had a few long articles that we had to read for a discussion next class. One article that we read was “The Trials of Alice Goffman.”Sometimes long articles like this one look daunting to me, but with the help of some active reading strategies I can get through them. Some of the strategies I applied when reading this article were rereading the passage, annotating what I liked and didn’t understand, annotating what the general message was, but also talking with my peers about what they got from the article. I always have to reread an article more than once because sometimes my mind starts wandering and I see more than I did the first read through. When I annotated what the general message was, it allowed myself to understand the article without having to reread it all over again when looking back at it during class. Also, annotating what I didn’t understand led me to another reading strategy which is talking to my peers about it. With a few of my peers, I asked them my questions and they helped me if they understood and if not I asked my teacher the next class. Talking to my peers always helps me understand an article more because it’s from a different set of eyes and they can pick up things that I don’t see. All of these active reading strategies allowed me to be more productive in the class discussion about this article, but also allow me to feel confident about this article. These active reading strategies will continue to help me in other courses here at UNE.
