Pre-Interview Reflection

Pre-Interview Reflection

The person I chose is a leader and role model for many reasons. Not only is she a leader in her role as a Pediatric Nurse, but also as a home health nurse to a child she’s raised for years, and as the leader extern in the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society Kappa Zeta-at-Large Chapter. She is also a tutor at the University of New England. I attended almost all her tutoring sessions for a fall class of mine, and I learned so much from her. I learned to not give up, she motivated me, and reminded me to keep up the hard work because it will pay off. Most importantly, she encouraged me to follow my goal of becoming a pediatric nurse because it can be accomplished. She is a great resource, advocate, and mentor. All these jobs, roles, and qualities she poses contribute to my reason for choosing her as my subject to interview.

I would say that this is a formal and informal leadership position. The reasoning for both is as followed, she is a formal leader in her position as the leader extern in the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society Kappa Zeta-at-Large Chapter. As a formal leader she is responsible for her position in accordance with the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society. She is also an informal leader as a Pediatric nurse because she has the same responsibility as the other nurses, but she is an influential person and leader in this role for her patients.

During and after this interview I am most interested to learn about her position as a new graduate pediatric nurse. I want to find out as a new graduate what resources are available to her and how she’s supported on the floor. I would also like to know how to manage conflict in a new position and overcoming challenges. New positions, new roles, and responsibilities can come as a challenge but lead to great reward. Lastly, I am also most interested in learning about how she maintains a work/life balance. While in school, it’s easy to have a schedule already chiseled out. After school there’s a new routine and work schedule with more responsibility and freedom. This allows for a social balance and more opportunity. I am looking forward to learning all this and more about my chosen leader!
