Prepare for Licensure (ATI Pharm Practice A)

Pharmacology is not my strongest subject. Medications are so complex and there is so much to know. It can be very overwhelming, and I find myself panicking when I take any Pharmacology exam because I don’t know what to expect. There are some things I know, some content I mix up, and a lot of content I don’t know. I find doing these practice assessments are helpful in reviewing material that I do know but couldn’t remember, confirming the content I already know and remember, but also adding more content to the material that I didn’t know. I believe that the more practice pharmacology questions I do, the more confident I will feel for a proctored exam and the NCLEX. I appreciate doing remediations for pharmacology questions because I see myself putting the connections together and trying hard to master this content because I want to be confident in in pharmacology because that makes up a lot of nursing.

What went well for me was tracking myself with a timer again. Something I did differently this time, is try and not be tricked by what the question was asking me. I slowed down and if I had to then I shut my eyes and then opened them, so I was looking at the question again with fresh eyes. I think that helped and allowed myself to maintain focus. I can always improve on manifestations of medications. I think the more questions I do, and the more I learn, the better I will be at noticing similarities and coming up with pneumonics in my head to remember manifestations of medications. As I reflect on my SMART goals, I see that I am specific in wanting to master pharmacology material, measurable because I will continue to practice and put in the work before I take the NCLEX, attainable because the more I practice the more I will know and be confident in for the NCLEX, relevant because this material is not going away and is crucial to nursing and patient care, and lastly time-bound because I timed myself on questions to prep for NCLEX style questions. I will carry this experience forward to my next assessment because I will know more material and take the assessment with more confidence. I will also have a positive attitude and mindset that this assessment is bettering my success to master this material and do well on the NCLEX.

  1. Great insight! Try reframing your thinking – rather than “Pharmacology is not my strongest subject” (which seems like a steady and unchangeable state), focus instead on “I am doing all I can to increase my confidence on pharmacology questions.” You can master this content!
